Election error puts school board race in doubt

An error may put the hotly contested race for a seat on the Hazleton Area School Board in doubt.

Incumbent school director Steven Hahn withdrew from the race in March and notified the Luzerne County election bureau as required by law. However, Luzerne County apparently did not notify officials in Schuylkill and Carbon counties, who have areas who vote in the district. Hahn's name was not on Luzerne ballots but appeared on ballots in Schuylkill and Carbon. Two incumbent directors and a newcomer appear to have won both nominations for three of the four seats up for election. However, the fourth seat is in question. Incumbents Robert Mehalick and Clarence John and newcomer James Chapman, got both nods.In the race for the fourth seat incumbent Carmella Yenkevich is just eight votes ahead of Jared O'Donnell on the Democratic ballot, and 41 votes behind John for the fourth spot on the Republican ballot. In Schuylkill Hahn got 226 GOP votes and 167 Demo tallies. In Carbon he got 107 Democratic votes and 53 Republican.Election officials in the two affected counties will have to decide what action, if any, should be taken in the matter.
