Monroe man dies when his taxi cab collides with fire vehicle

A Monroe County man died when the taxi cab he was driving collided with a fire company emergency vehicle. The fatal crash occurred about 11:17 a.m. on Sunday along SR196 in Coolbaugh Township.

Killed was Michael West, 55, of Stroudsburg. He was operating a minivan taxi owned by the Pocono Cab Company.According to reports West was northbound when his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and collided into a Coolbaugh Township Fire Company fire police van, which was occupied by four firefighters.West was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by county coroner Bob Allen.The four firefighters, whose names were not immediately released, were all injured and taken to area hospitals. Reportedly two were released after treatment while two others were admitted.The crash occurred about 600 feet from the main gate of A Pocono Country Place development. The fire vehicle was not using its lights or siren at the time. Although it was not clear where the fire vehicle was going, it was noted by officials that many emergency vehicles and personnel in the area were helping with the Run for the Red Marathon which was held between Pocono Raceway and Stroudsburg High School.Pocono Mountain Regional police are investigating the crash.
