Mobile veterans center coming to Lehighton

State Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) today announced upcoming outreach events slated for veterans and residents of the 122nd Legislative District over the next couple of weeks.

Heffley will host the Department of Veterans Affairs' Mobile Veterans Center on Tuesday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Lehighton American Legion, located at 381 Bridge St.Some of the services provided at the center for veterans and their dependents include individual, group, family and bereavement counseling, medical referrals, assistance in applying for Veterans Affairs benefits, employment counseling, guidance and referrals, and alcohol and drug assessments. Appointments for this event are not required.He will also host veterans' assistance hours at his Lehighton district office on Thursday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Kerry Schimelfenig, a department service officer with the American Legion - Department of Pennsylvania, will assist veterans with their questions about benefits and can help file claims. Some of the issues he can provide assistance with include:• Compensation and pension claims.• Education benefits.• Enrollment in the VA health care system.• Burial and survivor benefits.• State benefits.• Obtaining military personnel and medical records.Veterans do not need to be a member of the American Legion to receive these services. Anyone interested in using this service is asked to contact Heffley's office in Lehighton at (610) 377-6363. His district office is located at 110 N. Third St., on the second floor.Lastly, in an effort to address federal and state issues across Carbon County, U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta (R-11) hosts a monthly casework day at Heffley's district office in Albrightsville, 2681 State Route 903, Unit 3, on the second Thursday of every month.
