Dementia patient placed in prison

A patient at Weatherwood Nursing Home in Weatherly, reportedly suffering from dementia, was charged yesterday in the death of a fellow nursing home guest, who also had dementia.

Carl Louis Smith, 52, was arraigned yesterday before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly on charges of involuntary manslaughter, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person, all misdemeanors.He was unable to post the $150,000 bail that was established in the case.Smith is charged with pushing Margaret Lechleitner, 85, in the nursing home on May 20. Lechleitner died at Hazleton General Hospital six hours after she fell, allegedly from being pushed.The charges against Smith were filed by Sgt. Michael Bogart of the Weatherly Borough Police Department.A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Smith at 11 a.m. on May 29 before Homanko.
