Gavin Krum given tribute by family and friends at concert

The 20th annual concert presented by the Lehighton Area Middle School Music Department opened with the jazz ensemble performing Jerry Nowak's "Swing Time". This toe-tapping performance featured seventh grader Erin McGinley and eighth grader Joshua Eckman. They also played a tribute to the great Count Basie, "Ballad for Bill Basie". The Jazz Band performed under the direction of Thomas Weidner.

Amanda Passiglia, a seventh grade piano player, played the part of the Count. The jazz ensemble raised the bar with the Latin Rock classic, "La Bamba". Piper DeMatte, a seventh grade alto saxophonist, was featured on this selection.The concert continued with the Fifth and Sixth Grade Band, under the direction of Weidner, to perform. "Tempest", and then played "March Grandioso and an African-American spiritual, "Peace Like A River", concluding with the classic 60s hit, "Surfin

U.S.A.". This group is also directed b y Weidner.The Seventh and Eighth Concert band, under the direction of Beth Perkins, performed several selections, beginning with "Blazon". Next, the band performed "Walking Tune", "Sands of Egypt", "Celtic Air and Dance No. 3", followed by "The Eighties", a medley of the most popular songs of the 1980s, featuring talents of Jordan Lichtenwalner, Erin McGinley, Morgan Steigerwalt, Grace Shanton, Patrick Lawler, Kira Kuehner, and Samantha Smalley. John Phillip Sousa's "El Capitan" concluded the Seventh and Eighth grade band's performance.The concert ended with a tribute performance to eighth grade band member Gavin Krum who had succumbed to cancer this past fall. Gavin was an enthusiast and avid collector of Transformers memorabilia. As a tribute to Gavin, the Seventh and Eighth grade band, along with his parents, grandfather and many other special guests, performed music from the Transformers franchise as a grand finale. Their performance was given a standing ovation by the near capacity crowd attending the concert.
