Green Squad wins first at CCEEC Envirothon

Green Squad, third grade students at Franklin Elementary School, Lehighton Area School District, took first place with 439 points during the 2013 second and third grade Envirothon (Snoops division), held at Carbon County Environmental Education Center in Summit Hill on Monday. Members of Green Squad are, from left, front row, Ian Werner, Emily Snyder, Sherry Nametko, and back row, Holly Fasching and Abigail Meckes. Accompanying the team was their teacher, Laurel Zimmerman, left, and Dave Hawk, chairman of the environmental committee representing local area Lions Clubs, second from right; and Jeannie Carl, right, naturalist. Other teams which placed are, Scientists, Franklin Elementary School, second, 419 points; Great Horned Owls, Penn-Kidder Elementary School, Jim Thorpe School District, third, 418 points; and fourth, Amazing Eagles, Ss. Palmer Elementary School, Palmerton Area School District, 416 points. The Envirothon continues until Thursday with additional grade levels. Local Lions Clubs sponsor the annual event.
