Contest winners announced

The winners of the Lehighton AMVETS Post 106 Americanism Contests have been announced.The contest was open to all third and seventh graders in the Lehighton Area School District. The topic for this year's contest was: "Why It is Important to Vote."Third grade Poster Contest winners are: first place, Hailey Long, $50; second place, Ronald Snyder, $30; third place, Callie Hayman, $20. All three winners were from Mahoning Elementary SchoolSeventh Grade Essay Contest: first place, Felicia Sue Anthony, $50; second place, Gregory Venuto, $30. Both winners were from Lehighton Area Middle School.The prizes will be awarded at the Lehighton Area Middle School Spring Concert.Trinity happeningsTrinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St, Lehighton, will hold worship services this week including First Saturday with Holy Communion at 5 p.m. The Rev. Michael Frost, pastor at Zion's Stone Church, New Ringgold, presides.Sixth Sunday of Easter worship with Holy Communion will be held at 9 a.m. May 5, with interim minister the Rev. Donald Hayn presiding. Coffeehouse fellowship follows. Sunday School Power Hour begins at 10:15 a.m. for ages 3 through adult. The final classes meet May 12 before the summer break.First Tuesday quiet communion will be held at 10 a.m., May 7.A free Mother-Daughter Brunch will be held Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Luther Hall. Synod Bike for World Hunger will take place at the Bob Rodale Fitness and Cycling Park, west of Mosser Road, Trexlertown, May 18. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., the event begins at 9 a.m. and ends by 1 p.m. Contact the church office at (610) 377-4303 for a sponsor sheet to benefit the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) World Hunger Appeal. Participants are welcome to ride and/or pledge.Applications for scholarships for 2013 Nursing and Higher Education are available in the church office. Graduating seniors from Lehighton Area High School (applicants from other Carbon County school will be considered) may apply. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Deadline is June 1.Trinity Lutheran Church Council secretary Sharen Ace lost her home and possessions in a fire last month. The congregation set up an account at PNC Bank for those who wish to assist her during this time. Donations can be taken to the Lehighton PNC branches at either 154 S. First St. or 1279 Blakeslee Blvd. Any check received at the church office on Sharen's behalf will be deposited to the PNC account. The name of the account is "Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church - Sharen Ace Fire Fund."Looking ahead is Community Vacation Bible School June 16-20 (6:30 to 8:30p.m.) for youngsters ages 3 through grade six.
