Five Tamaqua residents were among 17 who entered guilty pleas to criminal charges in Schuylkill County court and were sentenced by Judge Jacqueline Russell.

Jason E. Bankes, 20, of 322 Hazle St., pleaded to burglary and was sentenced to serve one to 23 months in the county prison with credit for serving 20 days. The sentence is to begin Wednesday, May 1, at 9 a.m.Bankes also must pay $50 to the Criminal Justice Enhancement Account (CJEA) fund, perform 29 hours of community service, and make restitution of $1,343.10 to B. Godshall, White Birch Golf Course, Barnesville, and pay $50 to the district attorney's office for a bench warrant.Bankes was cited by Rush Township Sgt. Duane Frederick, with theft of 160 lottery tickets from the golf shop. The court also imposed a harsh penalty ordering he stay away from the golf course.Richard H. Melicharek, 51, of 214 Pine St., Apt. 3, forgery, passing a bad check and theft, placed on probation 36 months, pay $100 to CJEA fund, perform 40 hours of community service, and make restitution of $290.20 to Michael and Jacquelin Stank for using their credit card and $600 to Charles Odorizzi for a bad check to pay rent on an apartment.
