Nesquehoning VFW Post and Auxiliary to celebrate Loyalty Day

Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 and the Ladies Auxiliary will celebrate Loyalty Day on Wednesday, May 1, beginning at 6 p.m.

The program will be held in the social hall of the local organization. On July 18, 1958 the Veterans of Foreign Wars won a long, hard battle to have May 1 approved by Congress as Loyalty Day. It is designated as a day filled with activities designed to involve the community in a display of loyalty to flag and country.Residents are requested to fly their flags on May 1.According to members of the Post and Auxiliary: "In these turbulent times, Americans can pause, and ask themselves what they can do to demonstrate how they feel about their country. This has been quite evident in the past weeks with the spontaneous displays of patriotism following the Boston Marathon tragedy."But we must be diligent and continue to maintain a free society where loyalty is always displayed and respected. The United States has been, and continues to be, the world's best hope, for a future blessed with freedom. If we fail, the flame of freedom may diminish and fade forever."The local celebration of Loyalty Day began in 1987. Initially, the ceremonies were held at the intersection of Route 209 and 54. As traffic increased and the weather sometimes forced the program indoors, it is now permanently held at the Post Home on East Center Street.Awards are presented to those who maintain the ideals of freedom and the overall concept of Loyalty Day.This year, there will be awards for a regular member, veterans social member, social member and auxiliary member. There will also be a business award and a special award. The Voice of Democracy awards will also be presented that evening to Ethan Vermillion, Brooke Turner and Steven Reehl, who placed first, second and third respectively in the local competition at Panther Valley High School.Following the program, light refreshments will be served and an open house will be held. The public is invited to attend the program.
