Clean up

Tamaqua's participation in the Schuylkill-Keep It Pretty Spring Clean Up Campaign will be a little different from years past, as participants will be treated to a free lunch. The refreshments will be provided by Rural LISC, represented by Joseph Yarzebinski, a familiar figure in the borough.Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at the M and T Bank lot, Broad and Center Streets. LISC will also be providing free T-shirts to the first 20 volunteers.In addition, Highwood has agreed to donate 20 high quality flower boxes, with mounting brackets, to be used in the downtown area. All it would take is one hour per week, although anyone who can donate more than one hour is welcome.For more information, or to volunteer, call (570) 668-6954.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met April18 at the Masonic Lodge in Hometown, with president Jean Machamer conducting the business session. A moment of silence was held in memory of the victims of the tragedies in Boston and Texas. Jacquie Patrick provided the invocation, titled "Kid Monster," concerning school buses.President Machamer thanked members for remembering her with cards and well wishes during a recent illness. Welcomes were given to John Fredericks, Helen Hontz, Mike Regal and Phyllis Bergen. Reports were presented by the secretary and treasurer.A discussion was held on the annual picnic, to be held Aug. 15. Menus were provided by four potential caterers. Members will vote for a catering firm and menu at the next meeting.Members were reminded to refrain from parking in the driveway to allow access for emergency vehicles. Four seats remain for the June 12 bus trip to Knoebel's Grove.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship services Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The Sunday school class will meet at 10:15 a.m. Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 11:30 a.m.; the Emmaus Walk will be held at 1 p.m.; and the Scouts Blue and Gold Banquet will be held at 5 p.m.Activities for next week include: Monday, Bible study session at 6 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m., cherub choir will rehearse at 6:30 p.m.The junior and senior choirs will rehearse on Wednesday next week, May 1: junior choir at 6 p.m. and senior choir at 7:30 p.m.Calvary MethodistThe Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school for all ages will be held at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, an evening service on Bible prophecy will be held at 6:30 pm.An hour of praise and prayer will be held at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.Family movie night will be held at 7 p.m. on April 26.A National Day of Prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 2 at the Steigerwalt Church of God.
