New martial arts training center coming to Weatherly

A new martial arts training center is coming to Weatherly. Under the direction of Sensei Joseph Sebia, Broad Mountain Martial Arts will be opening its doors at 1 p.m. this Sunday, April 2.

Sebia is a 2nd Dan in Aiki Jutsu, Fudoshin Kai Karate, and Kumade Nobushi Kyokia Karate. He plans to offer classes in both Aiki Justu (contemporary street self defense) and traditional Karate. "Our goal is to create the best possible conditions to enable each person to learn how to protect themselves and their families," says Sebia. "We believe everyone has a right to self defense and that everyone is unique. Learning to protect yourself effectively should not take years and should be instinctive."Classes will be offered for both children and adults. "We differentiate ourselves from most other schools in that our training is based on learning about ourselves and what we, as an individual, feel," explains Sebia. "You will learn how to defend yourself based on what you can do, instinctively, without spending years trying to perfect a myriad of techniques that may be beyond one's physical abilities due to age, injury, strength, flexibility, or disability."The children's classes will especially focus on how to avoid dangerous situations and how to deal with them if they do arise. Sebia said the curriculum will include such topics as stranger danger, dealing with bullies, drug awareness, and abduction resistance. Classes will be offered on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm.Adult classes will be more dynamic and less structured than the children's classes, with a focus on defense against various attacks. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm and on Sundays from 10am-noon.Broad Mountain Martial Arts is located at Eurana Park in Weatherly.
