A tree planting operation was held on the highway between Nesquehoning and Lansford by volunteer groups from both communities in an effort to screen scars left by mining operations. Taking part in the project were members of the Lions Clubs, Boy Scouts and high school students. The program is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company. The Lansford group planted 6,000 seedlings. The Nesquehoning volunteers, starting at Tunnel Hill, planted 2,500.
