Dr. Douglas Arnold announced he was going to retire as Pleasant Valley School District's superintendent as of July 31, 2013, at the April 11 school board meeting.

"It's been an interesting six years since I was named PV's superintendent. I know things will keep on without missing a beat. We have a wonderful school board. It's a thankless job and the members put their hearts and souls into it. We don't always agree, but we come up with good stuff and we have moved forward. When you coach, you try to always find ways to be better. I think we have become better."He noted that he was wearing the same tie he wore the night it was announced he was named the new superintendent six years ago. He mischievously stated that his wife was really going to enjoy having him around more.Board member James Spinola said that he has served on the school board under two different administrations."It's been a pleasure. You have only ever had the community at heart. Thank you," he said.All board members, administrators, staff and members of the audience, gave resounding applause and many expressed their congratulations and well wishes.Carole Geary, PVSD's associate superintendent, will become PV's first female superintendent as of Aug. 1, 2013.When it was announced, that too was met with hearty applause.Geary began her teaching career at the age of 21, fresh out of college, as a math teacher at PVHS and has worked her way up to her current position as associate superintendent, a position she has held for the last 10 years."I love it here at PV. It's been my life. I have been truly blessed," she said.As for the next stage of her life, she admits that it will be a big job."I'm very excited," she adds.
