Businessman sentenced for street light fraud

EASTON, Pa. (AP) - A man who prosecutors say helped bilk an eastern Pennsylvania town out of more than $800,000 will serve 18 months to five years in prison.

A Northampton County judge sentenced businessman P.J. McLaine on Friday for defrauding Bethlehem Township through a streetlight maintenance plan.Prosecutors say McLaine's company, Municipal Energy Managers Inc., overstated the cost of buying streetlights from a utility company, then pocketed the difference.The Express-Times of Easton reports jurors convicted McLaine and co-defendant Robert Kearns of theft in January.Kearns will be sentenced next week. McLaine's lawyer plans to appeal.McLaine was granted immunity from prosecution in an unrelated 2011 Lackawanna County corruption case. He testified he helped arrange $360,000 in bribes to then-Commissioner Robert Cordaro, who was convicted and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
