Kidder Twp. EAC finalizes plans for spring workshop

The Kidder Township EAC held its monthly meeting Wednesday evening. The most significant item on this month's agenda was the upcoming annual Spring Workshop.

Every year Kidder Township's EAC holds a spring workshop for township residents as well as residents of surrounding area. Each year the council brings in speakers and demonstrations which keep with the spirit of sound environmental practices and conservation. This year is no exception. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, and will run from 9 a.m. to about noon. This year there will be two programs featured. The 9 a.m. program will be entitled "Birds of Prey" and will be presented by Susan Gallagher of the Carbon County Environmental Center. Gallagher's presentation will include a number of live birds and will educate residents on the birds of prey found locally, their food sources and preserving their habitat. The second session is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. and is entitled "Making Maple." It will be presented by Slate Altenburg of the Penn State's Master Gardener Program. The presentation will include identifying sugar maples, collecting and making maple syrup. Also on the agenda of Wednesday's meeting was the ongoing matter of "fresh water mussel recovery." Council secretary, Cathy Golomb has prepared a short list of the items that need to be investigated to determine if such a program is feasible. The EAC continues to reach out to educators, scientists and environmental and watershed groups that might have information relevant to the project.
