No final decision was made at last night's Buildings and Grounds meeting as to whether the Pleasant Valley athletic programs will accept the invitation to join the Colonial League for the 2014-2015 school year.But if left to PV coaches, their vote would be "No." Jake Percey, PV's athletic director said that when polled, the coaches voted 11-2 to stay where they were in the Mountain Valley Conference, of which the school has been a member since 1993.Board director James Spinola said that the athletics and scholastics in the MVC are a large part of Pleasant Valley's traditions. "I appreciate the offer, but I vote with the coaches."Board member Russ Gould thought it was interesting that PV received the invite."Lehighton is going to leave MVC no matter what. I think we should be in a league that's best for us."Former Pleasant Valley principal Rick Hackett said that the competition in the MVC is good."The Colonial League needs us more than we need them. I don't think that's our responsibility. I hope you stay in the MVC."The discussion ensued about what the difference was between a AAAA school and a AAA school, which is what the schools are in the Colonial League.Percey said it is based on enrollment. Anything above 506 males becomes a AAAA school. As of now, PV has 850 males and 826 females from grades 9-12, making it a AAAA school. Most of the directors did not want to see PV play smaller schools."If we go in Colonial, we won't play any AAAA schools," said Gould.Board member Susan Kresge asked if PV has any cocurricular activities that Colonial doesn't have.Dr. Douglas Arnold, Pleasant Valley's superintendent said they do not have chess, Mock Trial or Scholastic Scrimmage.Board member Steve Borger said that those are some of the things the district is proud of in the MVC.On March 20, Pleasant Valley received an official invitation from the Colonial League in a letter. The deadline for the district's decision was to be April 9. But at the March 28 school board meeting, board president Tom Murphy said that with four of the nine school board directors absent, (Harvey Frable, Russ Gould, Charles Hoffman, Dominic Sacci) it was difficult to make any kind of decision without their input. The issue was to be discussed at the Monday, April 8 Buildings and Grounds meeting with a decision made at the April 11 regular school board meeting. The board voted to send the Colonial League a letter to inform them of the timeline of their meetings and when a decision could be made.The Colonial League responded by giving the district until April 15 to render its decision. Dr. Arnold said a decision will be rendered April 11 regular school board meeting.At last night's meeting, Dr. Arnold said they had put together as much information as they could to make a decision and said, "We're flattered to be invited."
