Weissport Council accepted the resignation of borough secretary/treasurer Dana Brubaker on Monday. Brubaker has served as the borough secretary/treasurer since Aug. 2008.

Brubaker's last date of employment in Weissport will be May 31, 2013. Applications for the position should be addressed to Weissport Borough at 440 Allen St., Weissport by April 22.Weissport Council did have a visitor on Monday from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Timothy Kramer, real estate specialist, PennDOT, discussed two easements that are needed by PennDOT before the McCall Bridge project can be put out for bid.Weissport Council members signed both agreements.PennDOT has wanted a temporary construction easement to use less than one-tenth of an acre of property under the bridge and under the control of the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission to use for a staging area during the bridge renovation. PennDOT offered $1,000 for the use of the property. The property is located on a section of the Lehigh Canal towpath from Weissport to Parryville.Weissport is only one member of the Commission. Other members also agreed to the request, including Lehighton, Parryville, East Penn Township, Franklin Township and Mahoning Township. All of the communities agreed to have the fee designated for the Lehigh Canal Commission. Weissport was the last community to sign the agreement.In the second PennDOT request, Weissport was offered $800 for a temporary construction easement that would affect one-eighth of an acre of grassy property near the tennis courts on Franklin Street. That area would be an easement to use as a staging area for materials and construction equipment during the bridge construction.Also Council discussed an agreement for an easement made by Schumacher Engineering on behalf of UGI Utilities for a proposed gas main easement. UGI wants a permanent easement through borough property on the west side of Franklin Street. The easement is needed for the relocation of UGI's existing gas main, which is presently located on the bridge. The gas main relocation work is necessary because of the upcoming bridge work by PennDOT.UGI has offered $5,000 for the easement.Tim Rehrig, council member, reported on a recent meeting with Mark Marek of Educare. Rehrig said that Marek questioned whether the borough would designate four parking spaces in front of the school for one-hour school parking in the morning and afternoons on school days and to place school zone signs on Bridge Street near the school.Rehrig said that Marek has noted that he will put the request in writing.Brubaker noted that a letter was sent to PennDOT requesting a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Bridge and Franklin streets during the temporary detour. She noted that PennDOT has still to respond to the request.Rehrig also noted that a Bradford pear tree was cut down over the weekend that was planted on Bridge Street in front of the antique store through a grant. Rehrig wanted to know what the recourse was for having a tree cut down that was planted by the borough.Attorney Mike Greek said that the property owner is responsible for grinding the stump down and replacing the sidewalk. Greek noted that he cannot leave it as it is because it is a potential tripping hazard."Anyone who sees a tree planted as it was should know that they should not cut it down without asking for information," said Greek.Brubaker will research the paperwork that obtained permission from property owners to have the trees planted.The tree would have bloomed in a few weeks.
