Five evacuated after porch fire in Cumbola

Three adults and two children were evacuated from their Cumbola, Blythe Township, home after a resident reported heavy smoke filling the basement of the home Wednesday.

Firefighters were quick to find the cause and extinguish the flames, which started apparently started on the front porch of the home, located at 127 Coal St. Firefighters used a reciprocating saw to cut through the wooden porch to reach hidden hot spots.New Philadelphia Fire Company fire chief Ed Slane stated that the family was lucky they spotted it before it spread. Slane also stressed his appreciation to all the responding fire companies and fire police volunteers.Firefighter and neighbor Chris Zweizig stayed after the fire to help the family board up the porch.Responding were fire companies from New Philadelphia, Kaska, Pottsville and others. Pottsville Ambulance also responded. No serious injuries were reported.
