Lightning from a rapid moving thunderstorm struck St. Ann's Church in Lansford this afternoon, causing damage to a cross that sits at the building's highest point. The lightning, which lit up the Panther Valley sky at about 2:45 p.m., ripped through a portion of the left side of the cross causing pieces of debris to fall to the ground. Concrete and pieces of roofing paper fell onto Bertsch Street with one piece of concrete striking Mary Ann Macenka, a borough crossing guard, in the arm. She sustained a minor injury. The cross has been atop the church since the building was constructed in 1913.
