Driver crashes after falling asleep on I-81

A one vehicle crash occurred about 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, along Interstate 81 in Kline Township. State police at Frackville said Hector L. Fajardo-Diaz, 20, of Raleigh, N.C., was operating a 2006 Toyota Solara northbound when the vehicle crossed the northbound shoulder with the front end striking a roadside rock embankment.

After impact the vehicle rolled over twice, coming to rest on its wheels along the shoulder. Fajardo-Diaz claimed his cruise control and brakes malfunctioned and that "black ice" was also a factor.No ice was present at the scene and the crash was apparently caused by the driver falling asleep, troopers said.Fajardo-Diaz complained of leg and shoulder pain and was transported to the Hazleton General Hospital by McAdoo ambulance. The car had to be towed from the scene.Troopers cited Fajardo-Diaz for careless driving and driving on roadways laned for traffic. McAdoo Fire Company volunteers and others also assisted at the scene.
