Liberty defeats Bears in quarters

BETHLEHEM - Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Getz felt his team didn't wrestle bad, despite a 39-19 loss to Bethlehem Liberty in the quarterfinal round of the District 11 Class 3A Team Duals on Friday at Freedom High School.

When you get to the post-season, everyone you face is going to be good competition.Losing the coin toss, didn't help either since the Bears didn't get some of the matchups they had hoped for."The kids still wrestled well," Getz said afterwards. "If we could have won the toss, we could have gotten some different matchups here and there. Overall, Liberty is a tough team, they wrestled well and are very well trained. Overall, it was a pretty good match for both teams."The Bears jumped out to a 9-0 lead as Garrett Gouger scored all of his points in the second period for a 7-6 decision over bobby Diaz at 138 and Joell Toledo followed that up with a 3:03 fall of Ardis Smith at 145. It was Gouger's 15th win of the season and Toledo's 23rd.The Hurricanes then ran off four straight wins that took them out to a 18-9 advantage.Hunter Deihl (19-5) came up with a 18-12 decision over Liberty's Orlando Miller at 195 after a scoreless first period. The Bears also got wins from Mike Benner at 285 and Kenny Yanovich at 113.Benner (19-4) scored an escape in the middle period and kept Louis Csazar from scoring a point through the entire match at 285 pounds for a 1-0 win.Yanovich (26-2) kept Liberty's John Ritter off of the scoreboard in their 113-pound bout en route to a 9-0 win. Yanovich scored a takedown and two back points in the first period and then added a reversal and three back points in the third period for the victory.Liberty ended with three straight wins (two decisions and a fall) to move into today's semifinal round against Parkland, a 55-15 winner over Nazareth. Top-seeded Easton was a 52-22 winner over Northampton. The Rovers will take on Stroudsburg, who beat Pocono Mountain East on criteria, 29-28, in the other semifinal."Our kids did wrestle to the end, did a great job, and that's all I can ask for," Getz added. "We're a little beat up, a little young, but with the kids we had and our experience, we did a pretty good job coming down here."We're looking right now at the post-season. We still have one more dual meet with Northampton, but it's post-season time and we have to start training for that. We are going to work on things and fine tune some things with our better kids and we'll be ready to go three weeks from now.Liberty 39, Pleasant Valley 19138 - Garrett Gouger (PV) dec.
