Drivers facing DUI after crashes

State police at Schuylkill Haven reported two Schuylkill County drivers are facing charges of driving under the influence (DUI) after being involved in separate crashes over the past weekend.

The first crash was reported about 5:25 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20, along SR125, north of Echo Valley Campground, in Tremont Township. Troopers said Timothy Fritz, 20, of Pine Grove, was southbound when he fell asleep at the wheel of his vehicle while rounding a slight curve. The vehicle traveled across the northbound lanes and onto the east berm where it struck a embankment.Fritz was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency personnel. He sustained moderate head injuries and was flown by Medevac helicopter to the Hershey Medical Center. The DUI charge is pending blood test results, troopers said.The second crash occurred about 1:09 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, along Seltzer Road, east of New St., in Norwegian Township. Troopers said Sandra McDaniel, 41, of Pottsville, was driving a 1993 Saturn SL2 eastbound when she lost control while attempting to negotiate a curve. The car went onto the south berm for a short period of time, then traveled across the double yellow line and across the westbound lane where it entered the north berm and impacted with guide rails.The car then began to turn counter-clockwise while traveling along the guide wire. The right rear of the car then impacted with the guide wire post that caused the vehicle to continue to turn counter-clockwise before coming to rest along the north berm.McDaniel was suspected of DUI and was asked to submit to field sobriety tests, which she refused. She was then transported to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville, for a blood test,The DUI charge is pending the test results, troopers said.
