Albrightsville woman drives wrong way on I-81 for 18 miles

An Albrightsville woman who police said was driving under the influence of alcohol drove her vehicle southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 for 18 miles on New Year's Day.

"It was a miracle the operator and her passenger, or any motorist were not killed or injured severely from this incident," said a state trooper from the Dunmore barracks after Paige Cicardo, 22, of Aazlea Drive, was stopped via a roadblock. Police said light traffic due to the holiday could have created a more serious outcome.Police said Cicardo drove southbound from Dickson City (mile marker 191) to Laflin (milemarker 173.7).After receiving calls at about 5:30 a.m., state police observed the vehicle traveling in the northbound lanes at high speeds. Pollices tried unsuccessfully to get the woman's attention by using emergency lights and a spot light. When those efforts failed, troopers "raced" to get to a crossover about one mile away where "the vehicle was eventually stopped by using a rolling road block," police said in a release.Police said Cicardo was arrested for being under the suspicion of driving under the influence and reckless endangerment. She was taken to Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton, for a blood-alcohol test and then transported to the Lackawanna County Processing Center.
