A man drowned in the Lehigh River in Weissport Sunday when he reportedly went swimming.

A member of the Lehighton barracks of the state police said he was 33 years old and apparently homeless.It was reported to the TIMES NEWS that the man was Christopher Ferryman.The incident happened at about 1:30 p.m. beneath the trestle of the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad.Police said the man was at the edge of the river when two friends came along. He then went into the water to swim and began yelling for help.One of the friends reportedly tried to enter the river to help the victim, but the current was too strong, police said.Firefighters said they found the body under the water on the west side of the eddy, beneath the trestle."We found him within minutes," said Fire Chief Gary Frable.Responding was the Lehighton Fire Department, who has a certified dive team.Lehighton Ambulance, state police, the Lehighton Police Department, Franklin Township Police Department, Mahoning Township Police, and fire police also assisted at the scene.
