'Skookill News' pulls one over

The joke's on us despite an obvious disclaimer, satirical news site "Skookill News" had Schuylkill County residents buzzing this weekend with talk of an MTV TV show based off the "Coalcracker" life.

"Skookill News" is an online blog established on May 6 of this year that posts purely satirical articles. The site says it makes no attempt to function as an actual new source and the website's disclaimer reads: "This page is entirely for fun, the news that is reported on this site is not real. It's been created just for a good laugh."However, this disclaimer was overlooked by readers. The site's report, "MTV Eyes Schuylkill County to Start Series About 'Coalcracker' life," spread rapidly over social media this weekend and was believed by many to be valid reporting on MTV's interest in developing a reality TV show that would be filmed in the county.People even formed strong opinions on the effect the "Coalcracker" show would have on the county. One woman commented on the blog post of the article, "PLEASE I beg you MTV go back to music and stay out of Schuylkill county," while another man expressed his excitement. Only one comment out of the five established that the reader was aware the news was satirical. The operator of "Skookill News" has not listed his or her contact information on either the blog nor the blog's Facebook page, and a Facebook message asking for comment on the matter was unanswered.
