Schuylkill accident

A Schuylkill County couple avoided injuries after their vehicle struck a large boulder Friday evening in North Manheim Township.

Schuylkill Haven State Police said the crash occurred around 7:33 p.m., when a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu operated by Gerald Schoenauer, 65, of Pottsville, was traveling east on Cressona Road, at which time he struck a large boulder which had fallen off the hillside and onto the road.

At that point, the undercarriage of the vehicle struck the boulder, and after impact, continued traveling east with the boulder still under the vehicle.

The vehicle was able to pull off onto the south berm and was facing east at final rest. The boulder caused significant damage to the under carriage, which caused the oil to come out and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Neither Schoenauer, nor his wife, Barbara, who was the passenger, were injured. Both were wearing their lap and shoulder belts at the time of the accident.

The Cressona Fire Company #1 and several passers-by assisted on scene.
