Northwestern baseball team gets CL win

Northwestern picked up a Colonial League baseball win as the lone successful scholastic sports team on Friday.
Stroudsburg's Mike Nikorak tossed a one-hit shutout and also delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift host Stroudsburg to a 1-0 Mountain Valley Conference victory.
With two outs in the eighth, Nikorak singled home TJ Backer to end the Bears' nine-game winning streak and spoil an outstanding pitching performance by Dan Hrbek.
Hrbek went the distance, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out nine. Nikorak proved to be a little better, giving up just the one hit (to PV's Adam Raseley) and four walks while fanning 11.
Becker and PJ VanOrman each had two hits for Stroudsburg.
The loss dropped the Bears to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the MVC.

Anthony Rodriguez earned the pitching win and also contributed two hits and scored two runs to lead Wilson to an 8-4 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.
Phil Pierfy also contributed two hits, one a triple, and knocked in two runs for the Warriors (5-7; 4-5) while Mike Chorazak added a pair of hits.
For the Bulldogs, who dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the CL, Drake Steele had a pair of hits and knocked in a run.

Pete Long scored on a single by Bobby Mirth to give the Spartans a 2-1 win over the Bombers in eight innings in Colonial League action.
The Bombers tied it at 1-1 in the third inning as Nikos Milos of Southern Lehigh (6-2, 8-3)and Palmerton's Ryan Saylor were hooked up in a pitchers duel.
Lee Kuntz came on in the seventh and took the loss for the Bombers (1-6, 3-6).

Northwestern did all its scoring in the fifth inning as it defeated Palisades, 5-3, in a Colonial League game.
The Tigers (5-5) got a three-run double by Richard Perry in the big inning.
Perry and Alex Smith both finished with two hits for Northwestern.
Brandon Eden struck out six in six innings of work to pick up the pitching victory. Perry earned the save.

The Colts (3-4 overall, 3-4 league) commited three costly errors in the game that led to three unearned runs.
Peter Baddick pitched well in a losing effort for Marian, going the distance, striking out four, walking two and allowing one earned run.
Mike Cataldo had a hit, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base to lead Marian offensively. K.J. Snerr added a triple and a single. Baddick had an RBI single.

Bulino drilled a three-run homer during a seven-run fourth inning that sealed the win for the Crimson Tide (7-2; 5-1).
Sara Tobin tossed a two-hit shutout, with both of the hits coming off the bat of Sam Zlock.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 1-10 overall, 0-5 in the league.

Jim Thorpe held a lead after four innings but Schuylkill Haven roared back to claim a 13-2 non-league win.
Casey Rodriguez blasted a home run in the third inning to give the Olympians a 2-1 advantage.
Haven, however, scored four runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth to prevent Jim Thorpe (0-11) from gaining its first win.
The winners received three hits, one a homer, and four RBIs from Emma Schweigert. Morgan Wagner added three hits, one a triple. Brittany Loftus had a double for Thorpe.

Jim Thorpe didn't lose a set in cruising to a 7-0 victory over Whitehall.
The Olympians (6-8) were led by their singles players, Kyle Bacher, Dalton Becker and Lou Squillace, who all posted wins. It marked the second time this season that all three JT singles players won during a match.
