East Penn awards road materials contracts

Lehigh Asphalt Paving & Construction Co, Tamaqua, got the nod for the bulk of road materials East Penn Township needs from April 6, 2013 to April 5, 2014. The road materials' bids were opened at 3 p.m. March 25, and the supervisors awarded the contracts during their meeting Monday.

The other bidders were Eastern Industries Inc., Center Valley, and Hanson Aggregates PA LLC, Montoursville. The materials were itemized in 19 categories.Lehigh Asphalt was awarded the bid for items 1-5, 7-15, and 18-19, which included various sizes and types of stone and crushed stone, and materials for wearing course and crushed course. Hanson Aggregates got the bid for category 6 (3A stone), 16 (PennDOT Bituminous patching material), and 17 (driving surface aggregate). Lehigh didn't bid on numbers 6, 16 or 17.The supervisors will be advertising for fuel bids later this month, seeking prices on 5,000 units of propane, 4,000 gallons of heating oil, 7,000 gallons of gasoline and 8,500 gallons of diesel. The schedule for sending bids, opening bids and awarding bids will be in the specifications.The supervisors also appointed Carl Faust, Blue Mountain Inspection Services, as the township's building code official. Faust will conduct any inspections which are required under the Uniform Construction Codes. David C. Nothstein was appointed to serve on the township's zoning hearing board.
