Tears and prayers

Dry eyes were few and far between during a vigil luminary service held last night inside the Lansford American Legion in remembrance of the 26 victims of a school shooting in Newtown Connecticut.

"Out of this tragedy, we have to learn something," said Rosemary Porembo, Panther Valley School District Superintendent, during the vigil. "The job of keeping children safe is the job of every member of our community.""For some, reality is just setting in," said speaker Chris Ondrus. "Though this tragedy happened hundreds of miles away, it still affects us right here and now."Providing opening prayers were Father Jeremy Benack and Pastor Marjorie Keiter.Representative Doyle Heffley also spoke during the vigil, stressing the importance of teaching stronger family values.Also performing was "How Great Thou Art" and "You Raise Me Up" was Rick Dopira of Fort Lauderdale, Florida."We are role models for our children and must practice the values we expect from our children," added Porembo."Tragic events like this show us all just how precious life is," said Ondrus.
