New Ringgold man pleads not guilty to arson; others arraigned

A New Ringgold man, charged with four counts of arson and related offenses, was arraigned Monday before District Attorney Karen Byrnes Noon at the Schuylkill County courthouse and entered a not guilty plea to all charges and requested a jury trial. Eleven other area people were among a total of 69 who were arraigned and all also pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges filed against them and requested a trial.

Todd Deem II, 21, of 105 Dorset Road, New Ringgold, charged by West Penn Township Chief Brian J. Johnson, with four counts of arson endangerng persons and property, three counts of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of criminal mischief by endangering property by dangerous means, and one count each of agricultural trespassing on posted lands and criminal mischief to property.Information filed to court states while investigatng three arson fires in Setember 2009 in a wooded area off of Blue Mountain Drive near railroad bed about one acre of land was burned causing $300 in damages. On Dec. 12 and 14 , 2010, at 114 Dorset Drive, New Rnggold, a two story vacant home was damaged by arson fire causing $140,000 in damages; on April 9, 2011 at 1 Fort Franklin Road, New Ringgold, an arson fire damaged an old red barn causing $1,000 in damages; and on April 19, 2011 , Corporal Shawn Hilbert and Trooper David Klitch interviewed Deem at the Lehighton state police barracks, which led to Deem's arrest.Other casesSally Jane Hartung, 43, of 514 Arlington St., Tamaqua, charged by Tamaqua Patrolman Thomas Duane, with driving under a combined influence of alcohol and drugs last July 8.Steven Leonard Gaffney, 28, of 9 Tunnel St., Apt. 8, Lansford, charged by Rush Township Patrolman Corey Herring, with criminal conspiracy, retail theft of a television from Walmart Store, Hometown, and receiving stolen property last June 30.
