Clover Hollow hunt prequel to PGC program to honor veterans

At this year's quarterly meeting of the Pennsylvania Game Commission to set seasons and bag limits, the board of game commissioners - realizing that Veterans Day will be observed Monday, Nov. 12 - created a unique way for hunters to show their appreciation to active and retired military personnel by designating it as "Hunt With A Veteran Day."

Today, the members of Four Mile Outfitters, a group of local sportsmen affiliated with the Wounded Warrior Project, in partnership with Whitewater Rafting Adventures of Nesquehoning and Clover Hollow Hunting Preserve of Slatington will have an early observance of the PGC program with a pheasant, quail and chukar hunt for four veterans. Last year, Four Mile Outfitters and Clover Hollow held a Wounded Warrior Project hunt at the facility located on Lime Kiln Road."It's more than taking our veterans on a pheasant hunt; it's a reminder that every American, every single person can do something to support our nation's veterans," Four Mile Outfitters spokesman Scott Spaeth said. For Monday's "Hunt With A Veteran Day," the PGC has entered in partnership with the state chapters of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars to encourage hunters to help veterans discover or rediscover the thrills and joys of hunting. Opportunities include the final day of archery deer season, the first day of archery bear season and small game hunting. To recognize licensed hunters who step up to serve as volunteer guides for a veteran, the PGC will conduct a drawing to present six framed fine-art wildlife prints. To be eligible for one of the prints, a participating hunter must submit a brief e-mail that outlines the name and address of the veteran taken afield, type of hunting taken part in, and county where the shared hunt took place.American Legion or VFW members who take another veteran hunting also should include their member number. All participating hunters, including those not affiliated with the American Legion or VFW must send an e-mail to
