Jim Thorpe news

Author John LaRizzio will be talking about and signing copies of his new book "Hey, Milkman!" on Saturday, Nov. 10 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Dimmick Friends House, 58 Broadway, just two doors up from the Dimmick Library in downtown Jim Thorpe.

As a young teen living in Nesquehoning in the 1960s, LaRizzio spent five years as an early morning milk delivery boy, delivering dairy products from the Bear Creek Dairy on Behrens Road in Penn Forest Township. "Hey, Milkman!" features descriptions of the one traffic light town that Nesquehoning was then, when shopping was done in mom and pop shops.Delivering milk allowed him to intimately know the neighborhoods and homes within them, the dogs he can trust and the gates that require an extra push to latch. Through good weather and bad, customers could count on their dairy delivery, and all the time outdoors nurtures LaRizzio's love of nature. His job also taught him how to meet challenges and overcome hardships. This casual memoir opens a window to the past for those who grew up with milk deliveries and offers the discovery of another era to those who didn't.The public is invited to meet this local author and enjoy his stories. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library at (570) 325-2131.
