It's all about the power of the vote.

As such, the fate to elect our next president could rest in the hands of Northwestern Lehigh Middle School students.Well, not exactly, though students will gain a first-hand account of the process to elect officials when they participate in a Mock Presidential Election on Nov. 5.At that time, students in grades 6-8 will take part in the exercise, whereby the purpose of the school wide election will be to experience the electoral process by comparing homeroom voting results as both popular votes and as electoral votes.The bulletin board in the school's main foyer will be the focal point for election results. At three times during the school day, voting results from grade level homerooms will be announced schoolwide, and recorded on the bulletin board.A US outline map, divided into homerooms, is displayed, and each section will be shaded red or blue to reflect the assignment of electoral votes.Grade level homerooms have been assigned differing amounts of electoral votes, with eighth grade homerooms having 30 electoral votes; seventh grade homerooms, 25; and sixth grade homerooms, 15.Through the election, the Social Studies teachers intend to provide instruction focused on several key questions, such as what are a voter's rights and responsibilities; how is the popular vote reflected as electoral votes; will results of the school's election mirror Pennsylvania's outcome; and will results of the school's election mirror the nation's outcome.
