Man charged with making pipe bomb; facing sexual assault count

A Monroe County man has been jailed charged with making a pipe bomb. After his arrest on those charges, he was charged with sexual assault on a teenage girl.

Pocono Mountain Regional police identified the suspect as James Theodore Arnold III, 20, of Tobyhanna. He has been charged with one count each of weapons of mass destruction (a felony two), and prohibited offensive weapons (misdemeanor one). He was arraigned on Monday, Oct. 22, before District Judge Michael R. Muth, of East Stroudsburg, and committed to the county prison in Snydersville after failing to post $20,000 bail.Police said on Tuesday, Oct. 23, he was arrested at the prison and charged with statutory sexual assault. He will be arraigned on the new charges via video at the prison, police said.Bomb casePolice said on Monday Officer Richard Michael and Det. John P. Bohrman responded to the Arnold residence at 1652 Sunnyside Drive, and observed a suspected device and a can of black powder in the bedroom of the suspect.Michael interviewed the suspect's father, James Arnold II, regarding a "pipe bomb" he found in his son's bedroom. The father told the officer on Oct. 12 he found a bunch of cut PVC pipes on the floor of the garage of his home.Police said they received additional information that Arnold III made a pipe bomb intending to use it on someone he was having problems with.At the residence the officers called for the assistance of the Lackawanna Bomb Squad. The squad responded and secured the bomb and later disabled it in a secure area. Once secured the device was shown to contain what appeared to be black power and rocks.Bohrman then made contact with the suspect and he admitted making the bomb. He said it contained black powder, rocks and paper towels. Arnold III told police he made the device about three to four weeks earlier.Assisting Pocono officers were Coolbaugh Township Fire Company volunteers, Pocono area EMS unit, Pike County Sheriff's Department, A Pocono Country Place security, and the Lackawanna squad.Police said on Tuesday they arrested a second suspect in the case, Jeremy Sohle, 19, of Tobyhanna. He was charged with criminal conspiracy to commit-weapons of mass destruction. He was arraigned before DJ Muth and bail set at $10,000 unsecured.Police said additional arrest are expected.Assault casePolice said the sexual assault case alleges that Arnold III had sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl between October and November 2011, at a residence in Coolbaugh Township.
