Palmerton elementary building recognized as "Banner School"

One of Palmerton Area School District's elementary buildings has been recognized as a "Banner School."

Rob Palazzo, school psychologist, informed the school board on Tuesday of the achievement as part of his presentation on School Wide Positive Behavior.Palazzo told the board representatives from the Pennsylvania Positive Behavior Support team visited S.S. Palmer last February to complete the School-Wide Evaluation Tool "to determine whether or not we were implementing (School Wide Positive Behavior Support) with high fidelity at the Tier I level."The process involves document review, interviews with students and staff, and a building walk through, said Palazzo, who added that schools that earn a score of 80-percent or greater overall, and at least 80-percent on the teaching subscale are considered to be implementing School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Tier I with high fidelity."We earned an overall school rating of 88-percent, and an 80-percent in the area of teaching expectations," Palazzo said. "Thus, meeting the criteria to become a banner school."Palazzo added "they specifically commended our specialist teachers for taking such an active role in the program."He said Palmer is "the third or fourth school within our Intermediate Unit to be a banner school."Also on Tuesday, the board was approached by Charles Laviolette, president of the Palmerton Area Library board of directors, who asked each member of the school board for a $20 donation.Laviolette told the board the library held its second annual Palmerton Library Open last month, which raised $7,704 for the institution. He said Billy Cyr, President and CEO of Sunny Delight Beverages Company, served as the emcee for the evening. As part of his speech, Cyr challenged the Palmerton Area Library Association, and its supporting municipalities, local businesses, and members of the surrounding communities, to raise $2,500 by the end of the year, Laviolette said.If that task is accomplished, Cyr will make a matching $2,500 donation to the library, Laviolette said.He said checks may be made to the Palmerton Area Library, and mailed to 402 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton, Pa 18071. Cash donations are being accepted at the library. In other business, the board:- Approved Change Order #003, CMG of Easton, Junior High Gymnasium Renovations, Project #1059010.011.
