A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following a one vehicle crash that occurred about 12:55 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, along S. Front St., in Wayne Township.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Crystal L. Cortez, 23, of Pine Grove, was driving a 1992 Honda Accord northbound and approaching a right curve in the road when she fell asleep at the wheel. The car traveled off the road and onto the berm. It traveled about 54 feet in the grass before the driver's side mirror struck a tree. The car continued along the berm and struck a second tree with the driver's side front causing it to uproot the tree.The car continued on striking more trees before coming to rest wedged between two trees. The car then caught fire.Cortez was ejected from the vehicle through the sunroof, troopers said, and was found lying on the ground near the vehicle. Two unidentified persons pulled her to safety.She was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, by Medevac helicopter suffering from moderate injuries, troopers said.Troopers said the DUI count is pending blood test results. She will be charged with driving on roadways laned for traffic.
