Tamaqua couple to lead diocesan anniversary celebration

A Tamaqua couple that has been married 71 years will be honored at the Diocese of Allentown's 32nd annual anniversary celebratioin Sunday, Sept. 30.

Carl and Jean Hafer, members of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Tamaqua, who were married in 1941, are the longest married of the 143 couples expected to attend the celebration at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Orefield, which is scheduled for 3 p.m.Ninty other couples that have been married 50 or more years have also registered. In total the couples to be honored have been married more than 6,600 years.Allentown Bishop John O. Barres will celebrate Mass at the event and deliver the homily. Each of the couples in attendance will receive a personalized certificate signed by Barres.The Diocesan Office of Marriage and Family Life Formation sponsors the annaul celebration. Couples celebrating five, 10, 25, 40, 50 and 60 or more years of marriage are invited.
