Palmerton Area Library features more than books

The Palmerton Area Library is filled with more than books. There are activities galore to participate in.

There will be a town-hall meeting with Rep. Doyle Heffley in the upstairs gallery on Thursday Aug. 30 from 9-10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and ask questions.The 6th Annual Quilt Show will be held on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 12-4 p.m. There will be lots of beautiful quilts on display, plus vendors, demonstrations and more. If you would like information about displaying a quilt please call the library at 610-826-3424.Preschool Story Hour will begin again on Friday, Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m. It is free and open to the public and will continue throughout the school year every Friday after.The first session of Watercolor Painting Classes will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 19 and will be offered two days a week for children. Call the teacher at 610-824-4962 for more information.Homework Helpers will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 19 and will be held every Wednesday from 3-4:30. Volunteer tutors will help your child with his/her homework and other assignments. It is free but parents must register each child.The Teen Advisory Group for teens, in grades 5-12 welcomes new members. Check out the fantastic painted mural done by the teens this summer. Call the library and ask for Mariann for details.There will be a Book Signing with local author Elicia Stein on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. of her book "The PTA Man."The Knitting Club meets the first and third Monday of each month from 6-8 p.m. It is free and open to anyone interested in knitting and crocheting of all skill levels.Third Monday Book Club meets the third Monday of each month at 12-1 p.m. and discusses a different book each month. On Sept. 17 the club will be discussing "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins.Yoga Classes are offered every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Call the teacher at 570-436-1762 for more information or stop in on Saturday morning.The Library board of directors meets the third Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.A new Quilt Guild is forming in Palmerton and will meet at the library on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. Please use the side door. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm.Used books and movies are always for sale. New books arrive on a weekly basis as well as movies, puzzles and CD's.Volunteers are always needed to sort and place books on shelves.Get Rhythm music classes will be held for 10 weeks on Mondays and Thursdays beginning in September at 10 a.m. at the library. There will be registration and free demo class on Monday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. The classes are for parents and young children. It involves dance, rhythm instruments and songs.
