A Schuylkill County driver was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash that occurred about 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, along Interstate 81 in New Castle Township.
State police at Frackville said Steven Wikle, 42, of Frackville, was operating a 1999 Ford Escort northbound when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the road and crossed the right northbound shoulder and onto a grassy roadside culvert. After hitting a rocky embankment with its front right corner, the car rolled over, coming to rest on its wheels along the shoulder of the road.Wikle, who was not wearing a seat belt, was severely injured and flown from the scene by Lifeflight helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He was admitted in critical condition.Damages were severe to the vehicle.
