Crashes probed

State police at Lehighton reported on the following crashes investigated by troopers recently.

On July 4 about 1:45 a.m. Jill A. Smith, 51, of Lehighton, driving a 2005 Dodge Neon, was making a right turn into the parking lot of the state police barracks in Towamensing Township, when another vehicle attempted to pass her. The second vehicle struck the Neon with the driver then fleeing the scene.Smith was not injured.On July 5 about 10:15 p.m. a crash occurred in the area of 396 Old Route 115, in Ross Township, Monroe County. Troopers said Timothy Cole Liberty, 17, of Saylorsburg, was driving a 1999 Plymouth Neon northbound when he lost control. The car left the road and struck a rock and tree. Liberty was injured and taken to the Pocono Medical Center (PMC), East Stroudsburg, for treatment.On July 7 about 5:30 a.m. Guy J. Murphy, 19, of Saylorsburg, was operating a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire along Monroe Drive off Kunkletown Road, in Eldred Township, Monroe County, at a high rate of speed, causing him to lose control, troopers said. The car left the road and struck a tree head-on. Troopers said Murphy fled the scene on foot. He was later found and will be charged, troopers added.On July 10 about 7:50 p.m. Amanda Roze Stanchus, of Kunkletown, was driving a 1999 Pontiace Grand Prix along Weir Mountain Road, in the area of Doney Road, in Polk Township, Monroe County, when the vehicle caught fire. She managed to pull off the road and exit the car uninjured.On July 11 about 6:20 p.m. a yellow metal gate leading to the playground area off Old Route 115 and Bonser Rd., in Ross Township, was damaged by a hit and run driver.Also on July 11, about 11:20 p.m., a vehicle was being driven east on SR895 in East Penn Township, Carbon County, when it struck the rear of a 1995 Dodge Ram truck operated by Raul A. Planes-Martinez, 41, of Lehighton. After impact the driver fled the scene. Planes-Martinez was not injured.On July 16 about 9:19 a.m. Kyle S. Scherer, 25, of Palmerton, was driving a Ford van along Deer Run Road, just north of Pohocopo Drive, in Towamensing Township, Carbon County, and approaching a sharp curve too fast and crashed head-on into a tree along the berm.Scherer was injured and taken to the Lehighton hospital for treatment. Assisting were ambulance personnel from Lehighton and Palmerton and volunteers from the Towamensing Fire Company.
