Shickora finishes13th in 100 backstroke semi

Marian graduate and Georgia All-American Kristen Shickora missed out on a spot in the 100 backstroke finals for the second time in four years at the U.S. Olympic swim trials in Omaha, Nebraska on Tuesday.

Shickora competed in the 100 backstroke at the 2008 Olympic Trials four years ago, finishing ninth in the semifinals and missed a spot in the finals by eight one-hundredths of a second.Competing again in the 100 backstroke this year, Shickora advanced to the evening semifinals once again, but fell short of a spot in the finals, placing 13th with a time of 1:01.59.Shickora was clocked at 1:01.57 in to qualify 12th-fastest out of 162 swimmers for the evening semifinals.Shickora placed eighth in the 100 backstroke to earn All-America honors at this spring's NCAA Swimming Championships for the University of Georgia. She also placed 12th in the 200 backstroke, and helped the Bulldog 200 and 400 medley relay teams to 10th-place finishes at nationals.She placed second in the 200 back, fourth in the 100 back and ninth in the 200 IM in helping to lead the Georgia women to the 2012 Southeast Conference championship, the team's third straight SEC title.Shickora's Olympic bid continues on Saturday, when she will compete in the 200 backstroke.Panther Valley and Indiana University swimmer Allysa Vavra will also compete in the 200 IM today, the 200 butterfly on Thursday, the 200 breaststroke on Friday and the 200 backstroke on Saturday.
