Weissport man having problems with his neighbor who refuses to clean trash from her property

Trouble is brewing in Weissport and Weissport Council members are unsure what to do to clear up the problem.

A resident of White Street complained that his neighbor is hoarding garbage, allowing her grass to grow hip high and that weeds are starting to overtake her house. He also noted that he fears snakes and that mice have overtaken his basement, all caused by his neighbor's inaction to clean up.Michael O'Brien said that the only thing his neighbor has done is to put up a fence to hide her yard."The fence doesn't hide the poison ivy that is starting to grow into her chimney," he said. "He also noted that her dog is surrounded by feces and cannot move, plus the smell is awful." O'Brien noted that she has bags full of empty cat food cans that were not cleaned out. He said he thinks she is saving the stuff so she can recycle it, possibly for money, but she never gets around to doing it."I just had to throw out pool toys, sun umbrellas and a lot of other stuff because I am overrun with mice," said O'Brien.Council members knew whose home was involved, but did not put her name in public."We will get back to you about a solution by Wednesday," said Sue Pywar, vice president of council.O'Brien said that the woman has had plenty of offers to help her and some have gone as far as to mow her grass in the past."I'm not doing it anymore," said one woman who had tried to help clean up the yard. "I don't know what is in there."Another man said, "She said to me to watch out for her flowers, but the flowers and the weeds are together." The same man noted that there are groundhog holes in the yard. He said that he was mowing her grass until his own health prevented it."I'll try to get in there, but I'm not using my mower this time," he added. "It's a jungle." He said he also believes that there is an issue with her electricity in the home because he tried to help her by hitting a switch in her breaker box and got a shock."We're just not getting anywhere," said Pywar."She has had so many chances," said Gene Kershner, council president.Council also discussed purchasing a new tar buggy that has controls.Pete Pywar, borough worker, said that the present tar buggy is actually a model that is supposed to be used to tar roofs.Sue Pywar noted that council is applying for grant money to refurbish the tennis courts."Don't you think that would look nice to have new tennis courts next to that beautiful playground?" she asked.Council is applying for the local share account from the Pa. Race Horse Development and Gaming Act."The grant is supposed to be used to improve the quality of life for the residents," she said.Council secretary Dana Brubaker said that Lisa Shiffert's application to use the borough park is incomplete.Linda Schoenberger, a resident, said that she is assisting Shiffert to apply for the park use permit.Brubaker noted that according to the application, Shiffert needs to note that she has portable bathrooms.Schoenberger said that Shiffert has gotten permission from Mario's Pizza to have her attendees use the restaurant bathroom facilities.Council members said that they would waive having portable bathrooms if Shiffert can get the permission to use Mario's bathrooms in writing. The event Shiffert organizes raises funds to donate to Lehighton High School to educate children about drug abuse. The event is held in August.
