Schuylkill driver facing DUI count

A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following a one vehicle crash that occurred about 10:55 a.m. on May 11 along SR924 in Mahanoy Township.

State police at Frackville said James R. Onisick, 18, of Shenandoah, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu southbound and entered the left lane when the road split into two lanes. He then proceeded at a high rate of speed up a hill on the Gold Star Highway. The car then crossed over into the northbound lanes and then back into the southbound lanes. The car then returned to the northbound lanes where it struck a dirt and rock embankment along the berm. The car went airborne over a large ditch and the front struck the top of a dirt embankment. After the second impact the car overturned several times before coming to rest on its roof partially down the other side of the dirt embankment.Onisick was assisted in getting out of his car by a Shenandoah police officer. He was treated at the scene and then transported to a landing site where he was taken by Lifeflight helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for treatment of moderate injuries, troopers said.Troopers said at the scene they detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Onisick. They obtained a search warrant for his medical records to secure a blood test. A DUI charge and motor vehicle code offenses were filed against Onisick, troopers added.
