The State Planning Board has given its approval to the $1 million Lehigh River Gorge Project for Carbon and Luzerne Counties. The $1 million is for land acquisition by the state of 6,985 acres for what will be a new state park. The proposal now will be presented to Governor Ray Shafer for final approval. Much of the land to be acquired involves the abandoned right-of-way of both the Central Railroad of New Jersey and the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
