Daughter charged in attempt to kill mother

A Lehigh County woman was jailed Monday after being charged with attempting to kill her mother with a kitchen meat tenderizing mallet.

State police at Fogelsville identified the suspect as Judith Kauffman Savadelis, 55, of Macungie.Troopers said at about 4:29 a.m. on Monday they responded to 2507 Ludwig Court, in Lower Macungie Township, to assist Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel for an assault incident.Upon arrival, troopers discovered that Savadelis assaulted her elderly mother, Teresa Kauffman, 79, of Temple, Berks County, at the suspect's residence.Troopers allege that Savadelis repeatedly struck her mother about the head and body with a kitchen mallet. The mother was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for treatment of injuries.Savadelis was taken into custody and charged with one count each of criminal attempt-homicide, possession of an instrument of crime and harassment; and two counts each of aggravated and simple assault.She was arraigned before District Judge Michael Faulkner via video conference at the county booking center and remanded to the county prison after failing to post $150,000 straight cash bail.
