Dropped cigarette leads to Schuylkill crash

A Tuscarora woman sustained injuries just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday after crashing her grey Dodge Neon into the trees along SR209 in Schuylkill Township, about a half mile from Tamaqua. Schuylkill Township Police Chief Jesse Zimmerman stated that the driver, Jacqueline Oakes, 59, of Tuscarora, who was driving west on SR209, overcompensated after losing control of her car while reaching to recover a dropped cigarette. He added that Oakes was lucky that she didn't drive into two oncoming vehicles, whose drivers became alerted after seeing the vehicle swerve left and then right. Oakes was transported via ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital - Coaldale Campus. Responding in addition to Schuylkill Township Police were Tuscarora Fire Company, Mary D Fire Company, Tamaqua Ambulance and Tamaqua Rescue Squad.
