Tamaqua students organize Fit Day to fight obesity

Seven members of Mrs. Thelma Urban's 11th grade Language Arts class have organized a community-wide Fit Day as a part of a class project addressing modern social problems. These students have researched the issue of obesity and found that it is a major problem affecting the well-being of the citizens of Schuylkill County. To combat the problem, these students have organized a day of awareness of the issue of obesity and events to help people fight the problem.

Students involved are Martin Sedlock, Shane Mulligan, Joseph Franko, Brandon Fogel, Troy Reinhardt, David Frederickson, and Dylan Houser. The event will be held on the grounds of the Tamaqua Elementary School from noon until 6:00pm on Saturday, May 19th.Students are selling bracelets and T-shirts to help raise funds for the event and are looking to local businesses to help support them as well. The students are hoping to have the following attractions at the event: a community walk, various fun physical activities and competitions for all ages, informational kiosks, free health screenings, exercise demonstrations provided by local fitness businesses, musical entertainment and more. The ultimate goal of this group of students is to bring the community together to become more aware, both of the community's health needs and their own.
