Olympians sweep Colts Johnson sets record; Poallilo shines in victory

It's certainly early on in the 2012 high school track season, but on Tuesday afternoon the Jim Thorpe girls and boys track teams got off to a running head start.

The Olympians swept Marian by a score of 72-69 on the boys side and 89-52 on the girls. The Jim Thorpe girls ran strong all day, behind a stellar performance by junior Anjelica Poallilo. Poallilo placed first in all three individual events she competed in and was also the anchor on the 400 meter relay team that placed first as well."I just wanted to come into this season ready to compete and ready to push myself," said Poallilo. "Today was a good benchmark for me and showed me the time I put in the off-season really paid off.""Anjelica is working extremely hard," said Jim Thorpe head coach Frank Miller. "She wants to add her name to the list of successful Lady Olympian sprinters that we've had here in our short history, but she also wants to make a name for herself."Poallilo wasn't the only Olympian runner turning heads. Senior PJ Johnson set a school and stadium record in the long jump (21'5 1/2") without even participating in one practice so far this season. Johnson was bothered by an arm injury, but was cleared to run 10 minutes before the start of the meet."I think the time off really gave my legs a chance to rest," said Johnson. "It feels good to come out strong like that and set a record. I've been trying to get that record the last two seasons and to do it after not practicing at all this season really excites me for things to come."Khaaliq Lynch was also a big part of the Olympians success on the day. Lynch blew the field away in the sprinting events, winning the 100, 200, and 100 hurdles.Marian's Mary Kate Sherkness, who is known for her volleyball prowess (TIMES NEWS Area Volleyball POY last two seasons) dominated in the jumping events. She placed first in the triple jump and high jump for the Fillies."I think the fact that I do a lot of jumping in volleyball really helps me in these events," said Sherkness. "This is actually my first season on the team and it's been great so far. The coaches are great and it can only help as I move forward with my athletic career."Jim Thorpe and Marian will now head to the Tamaqua Blue Raider Invitational on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.BOYSJim Thorpe 72, Marian 69100 - 1.
