March 20, 1971 Lehighton heavyweight George Barkanic gains a win in his state semifinal match, but has to settle for a silver medal after falling in the finals. The Indian junior reaches the championship round by earning a 9-3 decision of Washington's George Reihner. In the finals Barkanic drops a touch 5-3 score to Erie East's Woodrow Thompson, who outweighs the Lehighton grappler by 20 pounds. Barkanic, one of eight District 11 wrestlers to reach the state finals, finishes the season with a record of 24-1.
