editor@tnonline.comThe Schuylkill Township supervisors paid tribute to the Tamaqua Blue Raiders swim team at their monthly meeting.Chairperson Linda DeCindio expressed how proud the supervisors and the community are of the recent success that the team had during the regular league season and league and district meets. DeCindio also wished the swimmers well in the state competition.Head coach Ashley Stanek provided a list of the teams' achievements, including the Lady Raiders' league championship and a third place finish at the District XI meet.In other business, supervisors voted to adopt a new burning ordinance, which will prevent residents from using burn barrels. After the meeting, DeCindio said that the typical barrels hold rain water and then when fires are lighted, they tend to smolder and cause smoke in the area.Supervisors also enacted a $20 per month late fee for garbage bills. Township secretary/treasurer Mary Bubel said that there are only five out of 544 garbage bills that remain unpaid this year."Two are making payments, there are two liens on two homes in Brockton, and there is one estate that is not settled," she reported.Supervisor Christine Verdier said that Bubel's collection rate was outstanding."You're doing a great job," she said.DeCindio said that over 60 bags of garbage had been collected from township roadways by township workers and participants in the work release program."Beds, box springs, tires, you name it," she added. "Keep it clean. If you sweep the street in front of your house, we will come pick up the pile."Dan DeCindio, the township's code enforcement officer, feels that a lot of the dumping, particularly of larger items, comes from people who are not township residents. Anyone who sees anyone else dumping illegally is urged to report it.Linda DeCindio said that the ESRC will be doing some repairs to the walking trail that is located along Route 209, including the area around the Newkirk Tunnel.The township received a proposal from Alfred Benesch for the Tuscarora Fire Company project in the amount of $6,100 for the design.Supervisors tabled a request from the Tamaqua Public Library for additional funding. Verdier said that the library already receives a budgeted amount annually, typically in November.
